Chapter 14. The Crime Scene
âWAS I OVER THE TOP?â Leah asked as they left the unit. âPerhaps I should have kept my mouth shut.â
âNo, no. Not at all. You managed to make him lose his cool, not an easy task.â
âTo be honest, that man gives me the creeps. I canât imagine anything worse than having to treat him and deal with him every day.â
âIn his case, I think that preventing him from doing any more harm is as good as it can get.â
âShall I call a taxi now, or do you fancy joining the historical tour of the hospital?â Leah asked and nodded towards a group of people crowded in front of the reception building. Before Mary could answer, Leahâs phone rang.
âYes? Ah, Marlowe. Yes, weâve just finished talking to him. Heâs tried to put us off the scent regarding the different versions of the book and heâs told us some things, but I donât know... Weâll need time to process and digest it all. Why?... No, I was going to call a taxi right now.â Leah listened for several seconds. âAnd Walkden agrees? Yes, I think so. Wait a minute.â Leah covered the microphone and asked Mary, âMarlowe thought that, as weâre already travelling, we could visit the scene of the first crime. Well, the one they sent me the information about. In Sparta, Georgia. Walkden agrees. Marlowe can get us a flight for this afternoon, we could spend the night there and then go to talk to the local police department and see if they can tell us anything else, and weâll go back to DC tomorrow evening. Is it OK with you?â
âPerfect. One never knows.â
Leah confirmed the plan with Marlowe and then called a taxi. On the way to the hotel to pick up their things, Leah told Mary more about her conversation with Marlowe.
âHeâs been pondering about our feeling that we are missing something. So far he hasnât found any new data. He told me heâs still trying to catch any interesting information but itâs like going fishing with a net with very big holes. Unless itâs something huge, we wonât catch it. We need something more concrete. And as we canât interfere with the investigation of the cases in Washington DC, he thought about the first case, the one in Sparta. He reminded me that we didnât have many pictures from the scene of the crime. When I asked for them, I was told their usual photographer was ill, and theyâd used a volunteer who had problems with his equipment but they were trying to recover some more pictures.â
âItâs definitely worth checking. And it will give us a bit of time to reflect on what King has told us. I have a feeling heâs given us some clue, but heâs hidden it behind a smokescreen.â
âDonât worry.â Leah smiled. âHeâs convinced youâre a genius and can understand his work, so perhaps heâll tell us everything when we visit him next.â
âAre you suggesting heâs the only one who believes Iâm a genius?â Mary said, pushing her chin out and shaking her head.
